Reverse Student Loans

December 2, 2008

This article from http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/01/education/01microbank.html discusses the microbank created by students at Meadows High School in Las Vegas, Nevada.  It’s a semi-inspiring story in which students raised money, $25, 000 to be exact, and are now in the midst of debating how to donate the money.  The most likely candidate is Peru, a place where poverty levels are very high.  In return, the people whom receive this money are to use it and eventually make more money for themselves.  Upon spinning a profit, they will, over time, pay the money back to the Meadows High School microbank, the committee that oversees the money.  Now, I do think this program is very well-intentioned.  It could be of great help to poverty stricken citizens of other countries.  On the other hand, with the escalating financial crisis and poverty rate in our own back yard, I think it would be beneficial if programs like these microbanks would operate at home some.  There are plenty of citizens worthy of having the money invested in them right here in the United States.  It might also be one method of getting citizens, and this country, back on its feet.
